About Us

What is RoofRay (beta, Phase 1)?
We are a solar array modeling service and community determined to help consumers evaluate solar for their home or business and to create greater awareness for solar overall. We think that's possible within a compelling lean-forward environment that's innovative and wholly useful.
What Will RoofRay Become?
We will be the leading rooftop solar community and comparative shopping marketplace. We're working to:
  • Provide residential customers the ability to quickly analyze solar for their home.
  • Provide commercial customers with sophisticated, yet simple, modeling tools.
  • Provide home-shoppers a place to check solar potential of a house before purchasing.
  • Provide APIs and "RoofRaytings" (Solar Potential per Residence) to real estate search engines such as Trulia, Zillow, and Realtor.com.
  • Create a marketplace where top solar installers and integrators are bidding for your business.
  • Increase the awareness and education of rooftop solar.
How did RoofRay Come to Being?
  • In early 2008, the Founder's utility bills starting inching closer and closer to the payment of a nice German sports-car. That's just not right.
  • Gas prices started to go crazy and it was believed utility rates would follow.
  • A belief that the solar potential of a home would become an important factor in future real-estate buying decisions.
  • After receiving solar installation quotes from various companies, large and small, it became clear that the process was fairly technical, and way too full of spreadsheets. And all the really important information necessary for a good solar estimate such as weather cycles, average cloud cover, surface albedo (yeah I know, hah?), or even the orientation and area of your roof was all in the hands of the solar installers. I haven't even mentioned the PhD you need just to understand utility rates! That's not to say Solar Installers are bad guys. Not at all. But the mere fact that the information is so scattered and technical makes it really hard for consumers to make informed decisions on solar purchases. It's a bit like the Real Estate business several years ago where good information wasn't available.
What We Believe
  • Solar shopping shouldn't be so confusing.
  • Solar installation information should be freely available to everyone.
  • We're not "Green freaks". We do believe in good stewardship of our planet but we're also realists. The economics must make sense for meaningful success. We think we can play a part in that.
